CFP: Theorising Personal Medical Devices: New Perspectives, Cambridge

CALL FOR PAPERS: Theorising Personal Medical Devices: New Perspectives
Post-doctoral Suite, 16 Mill Lane, University of Cambridge, Cambridge

Fuelled by the accelerating pace of technological development and a general shift to personalised, patient-led medicine alongside the growing Quantified Self and Big Data movements, the emerging field of personal medical devices is one which is advancing rapidly across multiple domains and disciplines - so rapidly that conceptual and empirical understandings of personal medical devices, and their clinical, social and philosophical implications, often lag behind new developments and interventions. Personal medical devices - devices that are attached to, worn by, interacted with, or carried by individuals for the purposes of generating biomedical data and/or carrying out medical interventions with/on the person concerned - have become increasingly significant in clinical and extra-clinical contexts owing to a range of factors including the growth of multimorbidity and chronic disease in ageing populations and the increasing sophistication and miniaturisation of personal devices themselves.

Design as caring in an Urban World - Final Call for Papers: Deadline: February

Design as caring in an urban world: Royal Geographical Conference, London, Tuesday 26 to Friday 29 August 2014

In his essay, “Building, Dwelling, Thinking”, Heidegger considers the interrelationships between care and design by arguing that we are only capable of building well when we know how to dwell, that is, cultivating attachments to our environments and, through this cultivation, giving and receiving care. Recent work in areas such as urban and cultural geographies, and science and technology studies, has further elaborated on this connection between care and design by exploring the affective and relational work that goes into shaping and repairing the fragile attachments between the human and non-human materials that compose the urban world. At the same time, the materiality of urban environments is often found to be inattentive to human difference and diversity, and rarely shaped by, or exposed to, a caring design ethic.

The British Sociological Association Annual Conference 2014: Changing Society

Wednesday 23 - Friday 25 April 2014 (Postgraduate Workshop: Tuesday 22 April 2014)

University of Leeds, UK

The theme of the BSA Annual Conference 2014 will be 'Changing Society'. This follows on nicely from the theme of engagement at this year's conference in London, where BSA President, John Holmwood, Guardian Columnist, Polly Toynbee and BBC Radio 4's Laurie Taylor all championed the need for sociologists to engage in public debate and prove their contribution. The theme of changing society will therefore focus on how sociologists are affecting that change, both individually and as a collective discipline.

Call for Papers: Global Health & Science and Technology Studies workshop

Global Health is an emerging medical field that makes use of multiple disciplines and methodologies to address health and well-being of populations in diverse geographical contexts. Global health as a concept is multi-faceted and in practice it is often characterised by neoliberal surplus health, vertical service programmes and collaborations between international bodies seeking to address health-related issues in low-income countries. Science and technology play a central role in analysing these recent developments in Global Health, and with its interest in materiality, knowledge production, infrastructures, scientific collaboration and boundary-crossing, STS offers tools to understand Global Health challenges.

Call for Papers- The Production of Neoliberal Subjectivities

Edges of Identity: The Production of Neoliberal Subjectivities

The production of neoliberal subjectivities is intrinsically tied to notions of space and place. Indeed, the geographies of politics and culture are scaled across multiple levels – not only in terms of the local, national or international, but in respect to how competing forms of self and society are repressed, on the one hand, and exploit niche opportunities, on the other. In each case how agency is expressed or is repressed is the point of fascination. Space, in this sense, is multidimensional and is sustained by discursive practices. This speaks to how we understand the enormity of international relations and social structures through to the intimacy of relations in the ‘private’ sphere. The normalisation and the reproduction of particular social practices are linked to the expansion and penetration of a neoliberal hegemony that rationalises, atomises and homogenises the world around us. This volume seeks to critically explore how a range of subjectivities is formed, constrained, reshaped or resisted when confronted by the expansionary logic of neoliberalism.

Call for Papers: Bias in Health Data

Public health research is based mainly on two different types of data: register data and survey data. Cases recorded in register data (such as hospital or insurance data) are the result of a selection process with several biases. For example, hospital data undergo several selection stages beginning with the definition of a mental or physical state such as being ill or dys- functional, the decision to use medical care, the subsequent diagnosis by a physician and the decision for or against a particular treatment and finally the choice for stationary versus ambulant treatment. Independently of medical or health issues, social mechanisms also bias the filtering process at each stage. This fact is of minor concern when using hospital data to describe the population of a hospital, however, the problems begin when data are used to estimate the prevalence of diseases depending, for instance, on gender, social class, or age: Gender is correlated with sensitivity to symptoms and the means of accessing medical care, while social class influences the conditions of health insurance and therefore also the cost of a particular treatment; older people are more likely to choose inpatient treatment since they may not be able to cope with the situation at home, which is also relevant for hospital data.
